With the arrival of winter, the waters along the east coast of South Africa cool, attracting billions of sardines that push north of the Cape attracted by the rich deposits of plankton. The “Sardine Run” is the greatest marine spectacle on the planet and attracts numerous ocean predators: dolphins, sharks and greedy whales throw themselves on the sardines, while gannets rush from the sky like rain.
